Luke 4:31-37

31 So He went over to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and began to teach the people on the Sabbath.  32 They were astonished at his teaching, because His message had authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he shouted out in a loud voice; 34 ‘Aargh! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?  Have you come to destroy us?  I know who you are; the Holy One of God!’  35 Jesus rebuked the demon and said ‘Silence!  Come out of him!’  Then the demon threw the man down in front of them all and came out of him without causing injury.  36 The people were all amazed and said to each other, ‘What is this message?  He gives orders to evil spirits with authority and power, and they come out!’

37 News about him then spread to every place in the region.

Luke 4:38-44

38 Jesus got up and left the synagogue, and He went to the home of Simon.  Now Simon's mother-in-law was in the grip of a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.  39 So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and she got up at once and began to serve their needs.

40 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus any who were sick with various illnesses, and laying His hands on each one of them, He healed them.  41 Now, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’  But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Messiah.

42 When day came, Jesus left, and went somewhere by Himself.  The crowds were looking for Him and when they found Him, they held Him back so that He could not leave them; 43 so He said to them, ‘I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, for this is why I was sent.’  44 He therefore continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.

Luke 5:1-11

1 It so happened that while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God,  2 He saw two boats moored at the water’s edge.  The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets.  3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put the boat out a small way from the shore.  Then He sat down and began to teach the crowds from the boat.

4 When He had finished speaking, Jesus said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.’  5 Simon answered, ‘Master, we have worked hard all night and taken nothing, but if you say so, I will let down the nets.’  6 When they had done this, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break 7 and they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to their assistance.  They came and filled both boats, to the point of sinking!  8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down on his knees before Jesus and said, ‘Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!’  9 For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken;  10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.’  11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed Him.

Luke 5:12-16

12 When Jesus was in one of the towns, a man was there who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and implored Him, ‘Lord, if you want to, You can make me clean."  13 Jesus reached out His hand, took hold of the leper and said, ‘I want to. Be clean.’  And the leprosy left him immediately!  14 Then He ordered the man, ‘Tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, as proof for them.’

15 However, the news about Jesus spread around all the more, and great crowds would gather to hear him and to be healed of their illnesses.  16 But he would get away to isolated places and pray.

Luke 5:17-26

17 Around then, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting nearby while He was teaching; they had come from all the villages of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal.  18 Then some men brought a paralysed man on a bed.  They were attempting to bring him in and set him down before Jesus;  19 but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and together with his bed, they let him down through the tiles into the midst of them, in front of Jesus!  20 When he saw their faith, he said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven you.’

21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think about this and said, ‘Who is this man speaking blasphemies?  Who can forgive sins but God alone?’  22 But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus asked them, ‘Why are you questioning this in your hearts?  23 Which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven you,” or to say, “Stand up and walk”?  24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins (he then spoke to the man who was paralyzed) I tell you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.’  25 The he stood up before them at once!  He took up his sick bed and went to his home, giving glory to God!

26 They were all struck with astonishment; they gave glory to God and were filled with awe, saying, ‘We have seen incredible things today.’

Luke 5:27-32

27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the revenue booth, and He said to him ‘Follow me.’  28 Then he got up, left everything, and began to follow Him!  29 Levi held a great banquet for Jesus in his house, and a large company of tax collectors and others sat down to eat with them.  30 But the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble to Jesus’ disciples and said, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’  31  Jesus answered them by saying, ‘It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are sick.  32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.’

Luke 5:33-39

33 Then they said to Him, ‘John's disciples often fast and pray, just like the disciples of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink!’  34 Jesus said to them, ‘Should you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?  35 The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.’

36 So He told them a parable: ‘No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one; otherwise the new will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old.  37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will be lost and the skins destroyed.  38 But new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.  39 No one wants the new wine after drinking the old, for he says, “The old is good.”’

Luke 6:1-5

1 On the second Sabbath of the Passover, when Jesus was going through the grain fields, His disciples plucked some heads of grain and ate them, after rubbing them in their hands.  2 But some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why are you doing what is not allowed on the Sabbath?’  3 Jesus said to them in reply, ‘Have you not read what David did when he and those with him were hungry?  4 How he went into the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence and gave it to those with him, bread that should not be eaten by anyone except priests alone?’  5 Then He said to them, ‘The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.’

Luke 6:6-11

6 On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there who had a withered right hand.  7 The scribes and the Pharisees watched Him closely to see if He would cure on the Sabbath, in order to find some accusation against Him.  8 But He knew what they were thinking, so He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Get up and stand in front of us.’ He got up and stood there.  9 Then Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, is it right to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save life or to destroy it?’  10 After looking around at them all, He said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’  He did so, and his hand was fully restored.  11 But they were filled with fury and began to discuss with each other what they might do to Jesus.

Luke 6:12-19

12 Now around then, Jesus went away to the mountain to pray and he spent the night in prayer with God.  13 When morning came, he called his disciples.  He chose twelve of them and gave them the name ‘apostles’:

  • 14 Simon (whom he named Peter),
  • Andrew (Peter’s brother),
  • James,
  • John,
  • Philip,
  • Bartholomew,
  • 15 Matthew,
  • Thomas,
  • James (son of Alphaeus),
  • Simon (called the Zealot),
  • 16 Judas (son of James),
  • Judas Iscariot, the one who became a traitor.

17 Jesus came down with them and took up His position on a level place.  A large crowd of His disciples was there and a great crowd of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.  18 They had come to hear Him and be healed of their diseases.  Those who were troubled by evil spirits were being cured, 19 and everyone in the crowd tried to touch Him because power came out from Him and healed them all.

Luke 6:20-26

20 Then He turned towards His disciples and said:

  • ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
  • 21 ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.
  • ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
  • 22 ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, insult you, and dismiss everything about you as evil on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for look, you have a great reward in heaven!  Now this is what their ancestors did to the prophets!
  • 24 ‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received all your help.
  • 25 ‘Woe to you who are fully-fed now, for you will be hungry.
  • ‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.
  • 26 ‘Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you.  Now this is what their ancestors did to the false prophets!
