Matthew 26:14-25

14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, ‘What will you give me if I hand him over to you?’ They paid him thirty pieces of silver.  16 From then on Judas began to look for an opportunity to hand him over.

17 On the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?’  18 He said, ‘Go into the city to a man I know, and say to him, “The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.”’  19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and prepared the Passover.

20 When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; 21 and while they were eating, he said, ‘Amen, I tell you, one of you will betray me.’ 22 They were shocked and began to say to him in turn, ‘Surely not I, Lord?’ 23 Jesus replied, ‘The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.  24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.’  25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, ‘Surely not I, Rabbi?’ He replied, ‘You have said so.’

Matthew 26:26-35

26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, blessed it and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’  27 Then he took a cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.  29 I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink new wine with you in my Father's kingdom.’  30 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Jesus then said to them, ‘You will all be shocked and stumble because of me this night; for it is written, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.”  32 But after I have been raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.’  33 Peter replied, ‘Even if everyone is shocked by you, I will not stumble.’  34 Jesus said to him, ‘Amen, I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’  35 Peter said to him, ‘Even if I must die with you, I will not disown you.’ And all the disciples said the same.

Matthew 26:36-46

36 Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’  37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and became upset and distressed.  38 Then he said to them, ‘I am overcome with sorrow, even to the point of death; stay here, and keep alert with me.’  39 Going a little farther, he fell face down on the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup be taken from me; yet let it not be by my will, but yours.’  40 Then he returned to the disciples and found them sleeping.  He said to Peter, ‘Why, could you not stay awake with me one hour?  41 Watch and pray that you may not be tested; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’

42 He went away for the second time and prayed, ‘My Father, if this cannot happen unless I drink the cup, then may your will be done.’  43 He came and found them sleeping again, because their eyes were heavy.  44 So he left them again, and went away to pray for the third time, saying the same thing.  45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.  46 Get up and let us go.  Look, my betrayer is here!’

Matthew 26:47-56

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived together with a large crowd with swords and clubs, coming from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, ‘The one I will kiss, He is the man; arrest him.’

49 He immediately came up to Jesus and said, ‘Greetings, Rabbi!’ and kissed him.  50 Jesus replied, ‘Friend, do what you are here to do.’ Then they came forward and took hold of Jesus and arrested him. 51 At this, one of those with Jesus reached for his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, ‘Withdraw your sword; for all who draw the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think I am unable to call on my Father, who would at once supply me with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled which say it must happen in this way?’

55 Jesus said to the crowds, ‘Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a rebel? I sat in the temple teaching daily, and you did not arrest me. 56 Yet all this has taken place so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.’ Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Matthew 26:57-68

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered.  58 Peter followed him at a distance, up to the courtyard of the high priest.  He went in and sat with the guards to see how things would turn out.

59 The chief priests and the Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order to have him put him to death, 60 but they found no-one, though many false witnesses came forward.  Eventually two came forward 61 and said, ‘This man said, “I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.”’  62 The high priest stood up and said, ‘Will you not answer?  What is it that they testify against you?’  63 But Jesus kept silent.  Then the high priest said to him, ‘I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.’  64 Jesus said to him, ‘You have said so.  But I tell you, From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.’

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘Blasphemy!  Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy!  66 What is your verdict?’  They answered, ‘He deserves to die.’  67 Then they spat in his face and hit him; and some slapped him, 68 saying, ‘Prophesy to us, you Messiah!  Who hit you?’

Matthew 26:69-75

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, ‘You too were with Jesus the Galilean.’ 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’

71 When he went out to the gate, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to those standing around, ‘This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.’  72 He denied it again with an oath, ‘I don’t know the man.’

73 After a little while, those standing there came up and said to Peter, ‘You are also one of them, for sure, for your accent gives you away.’  74 Then he began ‘to curse, and he swore, "I do not know the man!’ At that moment the cock crowed.  75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: ‘Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept bitterly.

Matthew 27:1-10

1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people discussed with each other how to have Jesus killed.  2 They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

3 When he saw that Jesus was condemned, Judas, who betrayed him, was filled with regret.  He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.  4 He said, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’  But they replied, ‘What is that to us?  That’s your problem.’  5 Judas threw down the money in the temple, left and went and hanged himself.

6 The chief priests then picked up the money and said, ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, because it is blood money.’  7 So they agreed together to use it to buy the potter's field as a foreigners cemetery.  8 That is why the field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.  9 In this way, the words of the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled:

‘They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one with a price on his head, agreed by some of the people of Israel, 10 and they paid it for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me.’

Matthew 27:11-19

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor; and he asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ Jesus said, ‘So you say.’  12 However, when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer.  13 Then Pilate said to him, ‘Do you not hear how many charges they have made against you?’  14 But Jesus gave no answer, not even to one thing, to the amazement of the governor.

15 Now it was the governor’s custom to release a prisoner for the crowd at the Festival; anyone they wanted.  16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called (Jesus) Barabbas.  17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, ‘Which one do you want me to release for you, (Jesus) Barabbas or Jesus who is called “Messiah”?’  18 For he realized that they had handed him over to him out of jealousy.

19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, ‘Have nothing to do with that honest man, for I have been greatly troubled because of a dream about him.’
