Timothy 1:1-7

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the authority of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus our hope,  2 To Timothy, my loyal child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 When I was on my way to Macedonia I urged you to remain in Ephesus to instruct whoever it may be to teach no other doctrine,  4 nor devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies which create disputes rather than doing the things of God that are known by faith.  5 Now the aim of this instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith.  6 Some people have strayed from these and turned to empty words,  7 wanting to be teachers of the law, but without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions.

Timothy 1:8-11

8 Now we know that the law is good, if it is used legitimately.  9 This means understanding that the law is not set out for the innocent but for those who are lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for murderers,  10 sexual perverts, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching  11 that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he has entrusted to me.

Timothy 1:12-17

12 I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because he counted me as trustworthy and appointed me to his service, 13 even though I was once a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I been given mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord has overflowed for me, along with the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.  15 This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (of whom I am the foremost). 16 But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me, as the prime example, Jesus Christ might show complete patience, making me a pattern for those yet to believe in Him for eternal life:  17 to the King who is eternal, immortal, invisible, and the only God; be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Timothy 1:18-20

18 I am giving you these instructions, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies made earlier about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight,  19 having faith and a good conscience.  By rejecting conscience, certain persons have suffered shipwreck in the faith;  20 among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have turned over to Satan, so that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Timothy 2:1-7

1 I therefore urge you, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone,  2 for kings and all who hold high office, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.  3 This is good and pleasing to God our Saviour, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  5 For there is one God, and there is also one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus,  6 who gave himself to bring about freedom for all.  This is the testimony given at the proper time  7 for which I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth,  I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Timothy 2:8-15

8 I would like men to pray everywhere, holding up holy hands without argument or dissent.  9 In the same way, women should present themselves with modesty and decency, and dress themselves with good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes; 10 but with those good deeds which are fitting for a woman who claims to be religious.

11 A woman should learn quietly with all obedience, 12 and I allow no woman to teach or have authority over a man but must remain quiet.  13 Adam was indeed formed first, then Eve, 14 and Adam was not led astray, but the woman was deceived and became the one who sinned; 15 but she will be saved through bearing children, if they remain in faith, love and holiness, with self-control.

Timothy 3:1-7

1 This is a reliable statement; if anyone aspires to hold office in the service of God’s people, he longs to do a fine work.  2 It is therefore important that one who serves in this way must be irreproachable, the husband of one wife, sober, self-controlled, modest, hospitable, and able to teach; 3 not a drunkard and not quick-tempered, but considerate, peaceable and no lover of money.  4 He must manage his own household well, keeping his children obedient and respectful in every way.  5 For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of God's church?  6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become full of pride and fall into the devil’s punishment.  7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and the devil’s snare.

Timothy 3:8-13

8 In the same way, ‘helpers’ must be of good character, not deceitful, not addicted to drink or greedy for money;  9 they must take hold of the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.  10 So let them first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are without fault.  11 Likewise, women must be of good character, not given to gossip, sober and faithful in all things.  12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife, and capable of managing their children and households well;  13 for those who serve well as deacons gain a good reputation for themselves and show great confidence in their faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Timothy 3:14-16

14 I write these things to you whilst hoping to come to you soon, 15 so that if I am delayed, you should know how to conduct yourself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.  16 Without doubt, the mystery of our devotion is great:

He was revealed in flesh,

Vindicated in spirit,

Seen by angels,

Preached among the Gentiles,

Believed in throughout the world,

And taken up in glory.

Timothy 4:1-5

1 Now the Spirit specifically says that in latter times, some will abandon the faith by giving close attention to deceiving spirits and demonic teachings, 2 through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are branded as with a hot iron.  3 They forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God made to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.  4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, but instead received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is made holy by God's word and by prayer.

Timothy 4:6-10

6 If you put these things before the fellowship, you will be a good servant (deacon) of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with godless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself for godliness; 8 for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, because it holds promise for both the present life and that which is to come.  9 This is a trustworthy saying deserving of our full acceptance.  10 For to this end we work hard and do our very best, because we have placed our hope in the living God who is the Saviour of all, most of all those who believe.

Timothy 4:11-16

11 Instruct and teach these things.  12 Let no one treat your youth with contempt, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, faith and purity.  13 Give attention, until I arrive, to the public reading of scripture, to preaching and to teaching.  14 Do not neglect the gift in you, which was given through prophecy and with the laying on of hands of the eldership.  15 Put these things into practice, be absorbed in them, so that all may see your progress.  16 Look after yourself and the teaching, and persevere in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

Timothy 5:1-8

1 Do not rebuke one who is your senior, but appeal to him as to a father.  Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with completely pure intentions.  3 Honour widows, those who really are widows, 4 for if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to put their faith into practice in their own family and make repayments to their parents; for this is pleasing in God's sight.  5 However the real widow who is left alone has placed her hope in God, and continues in requests and prayers night and day;  6 but the one who lives for self indulgence is dead even while she lives.  7 Give these instructions, so that they may remain above reproach; 8 and whoever does not provide for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Timothy 5:9-16

9 Let a widow be placed on the list if she is over sixty years old and has been married only once;  10 she must be well known for her good works, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the saints' feet, helped those in distress, and devoted herself to all kinds of good deeds.  11 But do not include the younger widows; for if their passions draw them away from Christ they want to marry,  12 and so they come under judgement for having set aside their first faith.  13 Furthermore, some learn to be idle, wandering from house to house; and they are not just idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they should not say.  14 So I suggest that younger widows marry, bear children, and manage their households, so as to give the enemy no reason to slander us  15 For some have already turned aside after Satan.  16 If any believer has widows, let her assist them.  The church should not be burdened so that it can assist those who are real widows.

Timothy 5:17-22

17 Let the elders who lead well be thought worthy of double pay,  especially those who work hard in preaching and teaching;  18 for the scripture says, ‘Do not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,’ and, ‘The worker deserves to be paid.’  19 Do not accept an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.  20 Openly rebuke those who continue to sin, so everyone else may stand in fear.  21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels, I charge you to keep these instructions without prejudice and without partiality.  22 Do not be hasty to lay your hands on anyone, and take no part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.

Timothy 5:23-6:2

23 Do not drink only water, but take a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.  24 The sins of some people are evident and go ahead of them to judgment, but those of others appear later.  25 Likewise, good works are obvious; and others cannot remain hidden.

6:1 Let all who are under the yoke of service as slaves regard their masters as worthy of all respect, so that the name of God and the doctrines may not suffer abuse.  2 Those who have masters who believe must not regard them with any less respect because they are in fellowship; rather they must serve them all the more, since those who benefit from their service are believers, and loved.

Timothy 6:2-10

Teach and urge these duties; 3 whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and teaching that is godly,  4 is puffed up with pride and understands nothing.  He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and disputes about words.  From these come envy, dissension, malicious talk, evil suspicions,  5 and constant friction among people with corrupt minds who are deprived of the truth.  They think that godliness is a means of gain!  6 Now, there is much to be gained in godliness and contentment combined;  7 for we brought nothing into the world, and neither can we take anything out of it;  8 but if we have food and clothing, we can be content with these.  9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.  10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.

Timothy 6:11-16

11 But as for you, man of God, turn away all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.  12 Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.  13 I charge you, in the presence of God who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,  14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.  15 He will bring this about at the right time, He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords,  16 who alone is immortal and lives in unapproachable light, and whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal power. Amen.

Timothy 6:17-21

17 As for those who in the present age are rich, give them strict orders not to be arrogant, or to put their hopes on something as uncertain as riches, but on God who richly provides us all with things to enjoy.  18 Tell them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, generous, and ready to share.  19 In this way, they will store up for themselves the treasure of a firm foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.  20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Avoid the irreverent chatter and opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge;  21 for by professing it some have strayed from the faith.  Grace be with you.
